This is a wonderful piece of history.
It is an antique mourning locket which has a shiny black enamel on the front and back with a sterling silver cross to the front.
Black enamelling was a common technique used for mourning jewellery during the Victorian era and this still looks great but does have some wear to the edges which I have tried to show in the photos. Inside has deep red velvet inserts and it opens and closes securely. It comes suspended on a more modern oxidised sterling silver chain measuring a nice long 20", but this could easily be replaced.
