✯ ANTIQUE BOG OAK ✯
✯ MOURNING BROOCH ✯
This is a beautifully carved Victorian brooch.
Although it is often difficult to distinguish between black materials used in Victorian jewellery, I believe this to be Irish bog oak. Usually from Ireland and other Celtic nations, bog oak was used for jewellery in the early 1800s.
Like jet, bog oak is wood that has been fossilised in peat marshes or bogs. After many years it turns hard and black or dark brown.
It is usually lightweight and warm to the touch, and often with a matte finish, as seen in this beautiful piece. This brooch is a large circular shape which has a three leaf clover / shamrock in the centre. It has a typical c clasp on the back, which feel a bit loose but work fine. This is a very old antique brooch and is fossilised bog oak so there may be some nibbles around the edges but I think it is still in remarkable condition for its age. Please check photos carefully, thanks.
